William J. Mall, III attended The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, and Temple University School of Law, graduating with honors from both. He obtained his JD in 1990 and was licensed to practice law in California that same year.
Bill has spent the past 30 years gaining the skills necessary to excel at every aspect of the defense of his clients in civil litigation. Early on, he worked for Hartford Insurance as an in-house attorney, where he was solely responsible for a large case load across Southern California, representing automobile and business insureds. This was a sink or swim environment, and he learned the defense ropes by being given responsibility for every aspect of his cases, from initial client meetings and interviews through trial.
Bill then joined a firm that represented Kaiser and other medical clients, defending them in medical malpractice actions. Here he gained a great deal of medical knowledge that is frequently crucial in any personal injury action. He also gained insight into working with doctors and other experts, which is also frequently essential in the defense of personal injury lawsuits.
As that firm’s practice evolved toward employment litigation, including the defense of wrongful termination, sexual harassment, sexual and national origin discrimination, and similar actions, Mr. Mall threw himself into this new arena, defending McDonnell Douglas, Rockwell, and Boeing, including second chairing a Federal Civil Rights trial with a favorable result.
Still later, he joined a firm that defended Ralphs, Stater Bros, and Albertsons, where he excelled in defending claims such as slip and falls, truck incidents, and the like. He also represented pharmacies, drawing on his medical malpractice background, in cases alleging negligence involving prescriptions.
About ten years ago, he became DISH Network’s statewide counsel for general liability matters. He has tried cases for DISH involving a fall in a subscriber’s home, a collision between a DISH work truck and a bicyclist, and a subscriber fall off a ladder. Each verdict was outstanding. He also recently co-chaired another auto versus bicycle case for Enterprise Car Rental, and obtained an excellent result.
Bill has established a personal connection with his clients, and prides himself on handling all legal work personally. With DISH, he has an excellent relationship with the corporate legal department as well as the local managers, technicians, and other employees. He understands the value of such relationships, and the necessity of communicating with his clients throughout litigation.
Bill has tried approximately twenty cases, including eight jury trials to verdict, handled in excess of fifty arbitrations, including binding arbitrations, has handled many mediations and settlement conferences, and has taken and defended thousands of depositions, including many depositions of medical and other technical experts. He was named a “Super Lawyer” for 2020, a distinction which is the result of peer nomination and professional achievement.
Bill takes these lessons to heart, and provides legal services tailored to the litigation philosophy of the client. He provides excellent communication so that the client understands the case, the potential down sides, and can make informed decisions as to how to proceed on every aspect of every case.
